De Angulo Ranch

Historic Big Sur Retreat

Jaime de Angulo's Historic Homestead on the Big Sur Coast

Built 1n the early 1900's by one the area’s most legendary characters, Jaime de Angulo, the ranch is an important Big Sur historic landmark. Jaime (1887-1950), a Spaniard by decent, lived a bohemian life in the truest sense of the word, with stints as a cowboy, medical doctor, linguist and author. He was captivated by Native American culture; spending years studying Native languages and transcribing their stories. In the later years of his life, Jaime retreated to his hilltop ranch in Big Sur, where his writing took a turn to fiction and poetry. He mingled with and influenced fellow writers who shared a connection to the region, including Henry Miller, Gary Snyder and Jack Kerouac.

Our family has been the caretakers of the De Angulo Ranch since the late 1970s. This magical property is located on top of Partington Ridge, with panoramic views of the ocean and Big Sur coastline. A beautiful, rustic environment perfect for family gatherings, writing retreats or romantic getaways. We have unique accommodations with ocean or mountaintop views. There is also a two acre garden with a wide variety of fruit trees - mulberries, citrus, apples, pears, figs, cherries, guava and avocado.
